Polar Plunge Pipe Problems?

Ok, I guess that's a strange title, but these are strange times for weather!

This week the "polar plunge" in temps caused many of us to worry about our homes.  What if the pipes freeze?  What can be done to prevent damage?  I was pleased to receive a "reverse 911" call from the water company recommending a few things:

Know where the main shut off valve is located.

Consider allowing the faucet to trickle -just a bit won't affect the rate much, but it could save the pipe!  Place a plant under the drip & you won't need to water it, or catch the water in a pot or bucket if the sink is deep.  Be sure to leave the drain open!

Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach pipes under sinks.

"Wrap" pipes with insulation.  Hardware stores sell an easy to install product.

Hopefully by now you've turned off water to the garage & patio, but it doesn't hurt to double check.  And close your garage door.

If you think your pipes are frozen:

Keep the faucet open, with both cold and hot water running, to slowly unfreeze the pipes.

Turn your thermostat up, to increase the warmth of the surrounding air.

Contact a licensed plumber if you are not certain where the freeze is, because you may cause the pipe to burst if you’re not concentrating on the right area.
If you are sure of the location of the freeze, try warming the pipe with a hair dryer - NEVER use an open flame such as a torch.
If a pipe bursts, shut off the water at the main, and call a licensed plumber.

Well here’s hoping you stay warm, and remember, in a few months we’ll be complaining it’s too hot!
