So I won't be driving my collector (or inoperable) car - can I drop the insurance?

Seasonal (or inoperable) vehicles

It’s the time of year that many people are beginning to store their seasonal & collector cars.  Some people think they can drop the insurance, since the car won’t be driven for several months – right?  Wrong!  If the vehicle is registered (has a valid license plate), PA law requires it be insured for at least minimum liability and first party benefits.

When a vehicle owner drops the insurance, but fails to return the license plate (registration) to PennDOT, PA law deprives the person from first party benefits(medical, work loss, funeral and accidental death)  –, even if that person is injured in another vehicle that is properly insured.  Many vehicle owners are unaware of the law and unwittingly jeopardize their first party benefits.

So what should you do?  You have several options:

·        Continue to insure the vehicle (you can lower the coverage)

·         Send the license plate back to PennDot with the form available online to Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Return Tag Unit, P.O. Box 68597, Harrisburg, PA 17106-8597

·        Apply for a Seasonal License plate

But Don’t cancel or let your coverage lapse on a registered vehicle!
